The Municipality of Aranno: historical curiosities

The municipality of Aranno is located on the left side of the Magliasina Valley, nestled on a terrace from which there is an incomparable view of Pura, Lavena Ponte Tresa and Mount Lema; from some corners of the village you can even see Lake Maggiore and Mount Rosa.

Aranno, like other villages in the Malcantone Region, has very ancient origins evidenced by some ancient tombstones that show inscriptions in a North-Etruscan alphabet, later adopted by the Celts. From these inscriptions it is known that this area, having sprung up around a cult building from Roman times, was inhabited from very ancient times. In the year 880, Emperor Charles the Great confirmed its donation made by Empress Engilberga to the Monastery of St. Ambrose of Milan.

The municipal jurisdictional boundaries between Aranno and Cademario would be fixed in 1317, but still in 1567 they were sources of continuous quarrels.Even today the village looks like a medieval village, formed by arcades and alleys.

Building interventions have not changed its structure, and in 1997 Aranno received the Aspan Prize for the detailed plan to protect the historic core. Also of notable architectural interest are the Baroque church of San Vittore Mauro, at the southern edge of the village, and the chapel of the Blessed Virgin of Caravaggio, which stands on the crossroads to Cademario and Breno.
